Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate Waffles
Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, and packed with chocolate flavour.
We have already established that Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate is perfectly capable of escaping the mug.
So this time, it is joining breakfast.
These Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate Waffles are rich, fluffy and wonderfully easy to dress up with fruit, cream, chocolate sauce or ice cream.
They are perfect for lazy weekends, brunch, birthdays, dessert-for-breakfast situations, or any morning that could use a little more chocolate.
Ingredients
- 2 cups cake flour
- ½ cup Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- Pinch of salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1¾ cups milk
- 80 g butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- ½ cup chocolate chips, optional
For Serving
- Fresh strawberries
- Banana slices
- Blueberries
- Whipped cream
- Vanilla ice cream
- Chocolate sauce
- Maple syrup
- Chocolate shavings
- Extra Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate powder for dusting
Method
1. Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake flour, Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate powder, brown sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt.
3. In a separate bowl or jug, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla essence.
4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
5. Stir gently until just combined.
Do not overmix the batter. A few small lumps are perfectly fine.
6. Fold in the chocolate chips if using.
7. Lightly grease your waffle maker if necessary.
8. Spoon in enough batter to cover the waffle plates without overfilling.
9. Close the waffle maker and cook until the waffles are crisp on the outside and cooked through.
Cooking times differ between waffle makers, so follow your machine's usual timing.
10. Transfer the cooked waffles to a cooling rack while you prepare the remaining batter.
A cooling rack helps keep the outside crisp instead of allowing steam to soften the waffles.
Stack Them High
Now comes the part where breakfast can become as sensible or ridiculous as you like.
Stack your warm Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate Waffles and add:
- Fresh berries
- Banana slices
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate sauce
- Maple syrup
- Chocolate shavings
Finish everything with a light dusting of Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate powder.
Make Them Extra Crispy
If you prefer waffles with a crisp exterior, avoid stacking them immediately after cooking.
Place each waffle individually onto a cooling rack for a few minutes.
This allows the steam to escape instead of becoming trapped between the waffles.
Once everyone is ready to eat, then you may begin constructing the tower.
Hot Chocolate & Marshmallow Waffles
For a proper hot-chocolate-inspired version, add a handful of mini marshmallows to the finished waffles rather than directly into the waffle maker.
Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate sauce and a little Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate powder.
You can also briefly toast the marshmallows with a kitchen torch if you have one.
Chocolate & Peanut Butter Waffles
Warm chocolate waffles and peanut butter are an exceptionally good combination.
Spread a little peanut butter over each waffle while it is still warm.
Add banana slices and drizzle chocolate sauce over the top.
If breakfast suddenly becomes unusually quiet, it is probably because everyone is eating.
Rescue Roast® Mocha Waffles
For a coffee twist, replace approximately ½ cup of the milk with strong brewed Rescue Roast® coffee that has been allowed to cool slightly.
The coffee deepens the chocolate flavour and creates a delicious mocha-style waffle.
Serve with another cup of Rescue Roast® coffee if you believe breakfast deserves commitment.
Turn Them Into Dessert
Waffles are perfectly respectable breakfast food.
But add vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce and whipped cream and suddenly nobody is pretending anymore.
Try adding:
- Vanilla ice cream
- Chocolate sauce
- Caramel sauce
- Fresh strawberries
- Crushed chocolate biscuits
- Chocolate shavings
At this stage you have essentially built an ice cream sundae on a chocolate waffle.
Excellent work.
Freeze Them for Later
These waffles are also great for making ahead.
Allow them to cool completely, then place baking paper between each waffle and freeze them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag.
When needed, reheat them in a toaster, air fryer or oven until warm and crisp again.
That means homemade Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate Waffles can be only a few minutes away.
250 g or 500 g?
Rescue Roast® Hot Chocolate is available in both 250 g and 500 g bags.
The 250 g bag is perfect for enjoying your favourite mug of hot chocolate and experimenting with a few Rescue Roast® Academy recipes.
But if your Hot Chocolate powder is now regularly becoming muffins, pancakes, baked oats, banana bread and waffles...
The 500 g bag may be the wiser breakfast strategy.
