Why We Don’t Flavour Our Coffee Beans

There is a growing trend in the coffee world toward flavoured beans.

Vanilla. Hazelnut. Caramel. Chocolate. Toffee. Cinnamon. Even flavours inspired by desserts and sweets.

And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying those flavours, at Rescue Roast® we have chosen a different approach.

We believe that great coffee should taste like great coffee.

Coffee Already Has Flavour

One of the most fascinating things about coffee is just how much natural flavour can already exist inside the bean.

Depending on where the coffee was grown, how it was processed and how it was roasted, you can naturally experience notes of:

  • Chocolate
  • Nuts
  • Caramel
  • Berries
  • Citrus
  • Honey
  • Spices
  • Dried fruit
  • Cocoa
  • Brown sugar

None of those flavours necessarily need to be added.

They are part of what makes coffee such an interesting agricultural product.

A skilled roaster works with those natural characteristics, developing the roast in a way that brings out the best qualities of the coffee without overpowering them.

For us, that is where much of the magic lies.

Why Make the Coffee Taste Like Dessert?

This is where our philosophy becomes very simple.

If we feel like something sweet, we would rather have a fantastic cup of coffee with a slice of cake, a chocolate brownie or a favourite dessert alongside it.

Why try to make the coffee taste like the dessert when you can enjoy both?

A beautiful piece of chocolate next to a great espresso.

A slice of cheesecake with a cappuccino.

A buttery biscuit beside your morning coffee.

A proper dessert with a rich after-dinner brew.

To us, those combinations are far more enjoyable than trying to turn the coffee itself into the dessert.

Let the coffee be the coffee — and let dessert be dessert.

What Happens When Coffee Beans Are Flavoured?

Flavoured coffee is generally produced by introducing flavouring to roasted coffee beans after the roasting process.

The purpose is fairly straightforward: the added flavour becomes a prominent part of the aroma and taste of the finished drink.

For people who enjoy flavoured coffee, that can be exactly what they are looking for.

Our preference is simply different.

Once a strong external flavour is introduced, it can become much more difficult to appreciate the natural characteristics of the coffee underneath it.

And for us, those natural characteristics are exactly what make coffee worth exploring.

We Would Rather Start With Better Coffee

At Rescue Roast®, our approach is to focus on the coffee itself.

We would rather spend our time developing blends that are naturally:

  • Rich
  • Smooth
  • Chocolatey
  • Balanced
  • Full-bodied
  • Aromatic
  • Bright
  • Sweet
  • Bold
  • Or wonderfully complex

Different beans, origins and roast profiles can produce dramatically different cups without needing to make the beans taste like something else.

That is why exploring coffee can be so much fun.

One blend may be smooth and easy-drinking.

Another may have brighter fruity characteristics.

Another may deliver deeper chocolate notes and a heavier body.

And another may provide the strong, dark flavour that espresso lovers enjoy.

Those differences come from coffee being coffee.

Good Coffee Doesn't Need a Disguise

Think about a really good steak.

You can certainly add sauce, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying it that way.

But when the quality of the steak itself is exceptional, you also want to be able to taste what you paid for.

We feel much the same about coffee.

When the beans are good, the blend has been carefully developed and the roast profile is right, the coffee should be enjoyable without needing to disguise it.

You should be able to smell the freshly ground beans and immediately know that something good is coming.

You should be able to taste the body, sweetness and roast characteristics.

And you should be able to discover the subtle differences between coffees instead of every cup being dominated by an added flavour.

But Isn't Flavoured Coffee Still Coffee?

Of course.

Coffee is wonderfully personal.

Some people love extremely dark roasts.

Others prefer lighter, fruitier coffees.

Some drink espresso.

Some drink cappuccino.

Some add milk.

Some add sugar.

Some wouldn't dream of adding either.

And some people genuinely love flavoured coffee.

There is room for all of it.

We are certainly not suggesting that someone is drinking coffee “incorrectly” simply because they enjoy something different.

We have simply made a choice about what Rescue Roast® stands for.

Our coffees are designed for people who want to taste the coffee itself.

Let the Coffee and the Treat Do Their Own Jobs

There is another reason we love keeping the two separate.

Pairing coffee with food is half the fun.

A rich coffee can be incredible with chocolate.

A smooth medium roast can work beautifully with cake.

A stronger dark roast can balance a sweet dessert.

A cappuccino alongside a biscuit is one of life's simple pleasures.

When both the coffee and the food have their own flavours, they can complement each other rather than competing inside the same cup.

So instead of trying to turn our coffee into dessert, we would rather pour an excellent cup of Rescue Roast® and put something delicious on the plate next to it.

That sounds like a much better arrangement to us.

Coffee First. Always.

Coffee is an extraordinary product.

Different growing regions, climates, processing methods, bean varieties, blends and roast profiles can create an enormous spectrum of flavours.

There is already so much to discover.

At Rescue Roast®, we would rather celebrate that.

We want our coffee to be recognised for the quality and character of the coffee itself.

No disguises.

No need to make it taste like pudding.

Just carefully selected coffee, thoughtfully blended and roasted to create a cup that we genuinely enjoy drinking.

Because sometimes the simplest philosophy is the best one:

Let great coffee taste like great coffee.

And if you're craving something sweet?

Put it on the plate next to your coffee. Best of both worlds.
